The Most Popular Method of Sinkhole Repair

Underpinning is the process of strengthening and solidifying the foundation of a structure by injecting high-strength steel piers deel below the foundation of a structure. It is by far the most popular method of foundation repair as it allows the structure to stand firmly in place despite the state of surrounding soils.

The Most Popular Method of Sinkhole Repair

  • The concrete foundation of structure is simply not strong enough
  • The soil beneath the structure has shifted or run off with heavy rains or sinkhole activity
  • To support added weight to structures, such as renovations or additions
  • Budget is a factor, underpinning is the most economical way to have a foundation supported
  • Structure is in Earthquake, flood, or drought zone, supporting the home despite underground activity

History of Underpinning

Believe it or not, the process of Underpinning has been around for well over 100 years. Back in the day, crews would pour concrete into large cylinders beneath structures, bridges, and large homes, essentially adding a secondary foundation.

Modern Method

High strenghth steel piers are inserted into the ground below your home until they reach solid ground, or bedrock. The piers are connected to the foundation of the structure via a steel bracket, that distributes the load over a larger section of the foundation. After that, the a concrete mixture is injected into the pier and forms a bulb below the pier, that ensures that the pier will not move below the ground.

This method is by far the most popular, safest, and most affordable of the underpinning methods.
