To the average person, one sinkhole is no different from another sinkhole except for the fact that one might be more damaging than the other. It may be surprising for some, but there are actually many types of sinkholes. New Port Richey residents should be aware that there are three main types of sinkholes that are dealt with by professionals. Understanding what type of sinkhole is present on someone’s property is very important for the individuals who are trying to remediate the situation as it can possible determine how to fill the sinkhole up successfully.

Solution Sinkholes

Solution sinkholes are often found closer to the surface of a piece of property that have a very thin covering of topsoil. With a solution sinkhole, New Port Richey residents should be aware that they are caused by water erosion caused by rain water permeating bedrock. These types of sinkholes do not happen all at once, but take a long time to gradually form.

Cover Collapse Sinkholes

Cover collapse sinkholes are not found at the surface of the ground like solution sinkholes, but rather they form deep underground. With this type of sinkhole, New Port Richey residents should know the cause of this sinkhole is eroding bedrock from above. Once the bedrock is removed, the surrounding sediments are known to shift or also get eroded, leaving a sinkhole behind.

Cover Subsidence Sinkhole

Cover Subsidence Sinkholes are different from cover collapse sinkholes for the reason that the cause is sediment erosion. A great way to look at this type of sinkhole is that they are almost a combination between cover collapse sinkholes and solution sinkholes, without the water erosion. With a cover subsidence sinkhole, New Port Richey should be primarily concerned if their property has much sandy soil or clay soil.
