While living in the State of Florida, every homeowner has to be careful of two very dangerous natural disasters for their home. Both hurricanes and sinkholes can do a lot of property damage to a homeowner and their property, but what is something that many people do not know is that they may be connected to one another. Hurricanes in the right conditions can cause a sinkhole. Town ‘n’ Country residents should know that this is something to keep in mind when someone knows that any category of hurricane is going to be heading in their area. Keep in mind that hurricanes are nothing more than severe storms, so this also applies for seasonal thunderstorms and rain.

Flooding from Hurricanes is the Biggest Issue

The main reason why a hurricane can potentially cause a sinkhole to develop on a homeowner’s property is due to flooding. When a lot of water is sitting for a couple of days and finally ends up evaporating or getting absorbed into the water table, it can leave behind cavities that are prime for a sinkhole. Town ‘n’ Country residents should be let know that there is not much that they could do in order to prevent this from happening or to avoid it all in general. Most of this depends highly on the land that a house is sitting on the geological conditions below the surface of the ground.

Heavy Seasonal Rains can be Just as Destructive

Even though hurricanes are known for being these massive storms that form, it is still possible that heavy and frequent seasonal rain can also create a sinkhole. Town ‘n’ Country residents should be made aware that when water gets absorbed into the ground, it can take away small amounts of sediment that can cause a hole to develop. Initially this is not so much of a problem, but over time after many instances where sediment is slowly dissolved, it can cause a massive sinkhole to develop and cause a large amount of damage.
