Sinkholes are a big deal in most of the areas of Florida where people can live. Most sinkholes are caught early, so they do not get too large and cause a lot of damage, however if a sinkhole is left unchecked or unnoticed, it can grow large and cause a lot of issues for homeowners. Most times a sinkhole will show signs that a sinkhole is getting larger on someone’s property, so there will be some things commonly seen when dealing with a growing sinkhole. High Point residents might want to become more familiar with some of these signs, as these can be a few at one time to let homeowners know that they are dealing with a sinkhole, not a natural phenomenon.
Cracks in the Walls of a Home
If a sinkhole is sitting right under a home and growing, one common sign that homeowners may start to notice is cracks in the walls of their home. Keep in mind that this is also a natural phenomenon over years because a home will be settling from time to time. These types of cracks often appear in a staircase fashion, and these are normal and not a sign of a sinkhole. High Point residents should be made aware that the types of cracks that a sinkhole creates on the walls of a home are not uniform, and can be quite sporadic. If you are unsure if the cracks are normal or not, it would always be best to call a professional to come out and give their opinion.
Yard Problems
If someone is not too keen on noticing the cracks in the walls of their home, they may be able to notice the different issues that their yard is experiencing as the result of an active sinkhole. High Point residents should know that the first obvious sign that there is an active sinkhole on their property is physical depressions in the yard. Oftentimes, a homeowner will not notice a depression in their yard until it rains, and water starts to pool in a specific spot of their yard. These sinkholes are easier to see if someone has a fence near the depression or a tree near the depression, but also keep in mind that, like the settling of a house’s foundation, some minor depressions are going to be from natural causes and not a sinkhole.
